Background
Olun is a confederation divided into eight states, each ruled by a prince. Each prince is the head of their state's own noble dynasty. All the princes together make up a Council of Princes, who periodically elect one of their number to be high king. The high king leads the Council and has elevated power and responsibility, but the princes can veto the high king on vital matters. Currently, Touram of Dinuz is the high king. The titles "prince" and "king" are used gender-neutrally.
Mar is a territory in the south of Olun which for a long time was the colony of a foreign empire. But a few decades ago, after a period of conflict and unease, Mar was ceded from the foreign empire to Olun, and due to not having its own ruling dynasty, it was absorbed into the state of Aforit. As such, Aforit has significantly expanded in size, population, resources and political influence. This has upset the nobles of the state of Posio, who increasingly see Aforit as a threat to Posio's special position as the largest and de facto most powerful state of the union. And while the people of Mar are glad to be free of the empire, they're sick of being made to play second fiddle to the rest of Aforit and are seeking more independence.
Story premise
Iden Keronvor is a young knight in training from Aforit, serving Prince Kuderi at Luru Castle. They come from a non-noble family, and are scorned by some for being of "low birth", or else for their lack of care for social niceties. Still, people generally think well of them, and some nobles outright shower them with praise... although the nobles may have political motives for being so nice and friendly.
Iden has spontaneously developed the ability to turn into a dragon. On the advice of their friends and allies, the gang collectively keep Iden's ability a secret... but the secret is becoming increasingly hard to keep. In fact, the nobles of Aforit already know... or at least, they think that Iden has enormous potential, and they don't want to see it go to waste.
But in the gang's attempts to investigate "suspicious goings-on" at the castle, the secret is blown right open... and as if that wasn't bad enough, a spy takes the opportunity to kidnap Iden!
The spy escapes, but is identified as part of a group operating out of Posio. Posio's nobles declare that the kidnappers are a rebellion they are attempting to crush, and they promise to deal with the rebels themselves as an internal matter. And Prince Kuderi declares that intruding on Posio's turf could escalate the conflict between the states and spark civil war, so Aforit's forces will sit by and wait for Posio's forces to respond.
Iden's allies refuse to accept this decision. The group choose to defy authority, and set off on their own mission to find and rescue Iden, no matter the cost...
