Setting details

Hlésenil

Hlésenil is a large terrestrial planet in the Kansitta system in the Almak sector (grid square J17) in the Mid Rim. It has three moons: Egwel, Ushwel and Múmel. It is home to the horan species and the Pandwe Order. The horan population is around 1.37 billion.

Much of the surface of Hlésenil, especially near the equator, is strangely layered, with a thin, broken upper surface and vast caverns underneath. The forests of the planet are mostly composed of large sessile fungoid organisms called roppoliki (sg. roppoli), some of which can be large and solid enough to have entire environments growing upon them.

Horan

Horanki are a reptiloid species native to the planet Hlésenil in the Mid Rim. They are bipedal, with long necks, wide hips and large tails. They are taller than humans on average. They have two visually indistinguishable biological sexes.

On their heads are long ears and a pair of horns, both of which vary in shape. They have manes that run from the top and back of the head to the tip of the tail. Their skin is scaled; scale colours are highly variable.

Horanki assign to themselves one or more ishálki (signs) as a form of identity expression. The most common ishálki are qosal (world), kebren (moon) and áje (star), but there are many others.

A notable cultural practice among horanki is kaminawi, where individuals strengthen their bonds with each other by sharing names. Most name-sharing through kaminawi is only between a few people and is deeply personal to them, but some names may be shared among very large groups of people, like all the followers of a particular school of thought. A name plus the suffix -sa refers collectively to all the individuals sharing that name, eg. everyone bearing the name Wergo is part of the Wergosa.

The Pandwe Order

The Pandwe Order is an organisation of Force-sensitives, based on the planet Hlésenil in the Mid Rim. The Force is strong on Hlésenil, so the main function of the Order is to train Force-sensitives to keep the Force in balance. But more generally, members of the Order also act as stewards of nature, in association with various other organisations.

Hlésenil is somewhat isolated, and the Order has only minor presence on other worlds, so the Order largely consists of Hlésenil natives. Even so, the training that the Order provides is not as comprehensive as Jedi training, so a decent proportion of young Force-sensitive Hlésenil natives leave to become Jedi instead of (or as well as) Pandweki.

The Order keep watch over various regions across Hlésenil called donoritki (~ sanctuaries; sg. donorit). Donoritki are important not only culturally, but also as sanctuaries for people and wildlife. They vary greatly in expanse, but most contain no more than a handful of settlements. Certain "inner parts" of many donoritki are held as sacred to the Order and are usually forbidden to outsiders.

The major ranks of the Order are botwe (initiate), kebi (guardian), and tilabi (master). The tilabiki are responsible for running the donoritki, typically one each, and they are collectively responsible for organising the Order as part of a high council called the Ifígure.

Members of the Order join as botweki. They are soon organised into small groups, traditionally groups of four, each tutored by a single kebi. If a botwe can pass a series of trials called a ledorút (traversal), they will be promoted to a kebi. Groups of botweki usually take their ledorútki together. Promotion is done on specific dates where numerous Pandweki are all promoted at the same time, in an elaborate public ceremony called an éyashet (ascension).

Pandwe Force philosophy puts focus on dividing the nature of the Force into four different aspects:

  • Réjedar, the Force Within, concering the self
  • Líjedar, the Force Without, concerning other living beings
  • Hlájedar, the Force Below, concerning unliving matter
  • Gújedar, the Force Above, concerning nonphysical phenomena

Pandwe Force usage is about the study of these four aspects and how to harness them and draw them forth, a concept called kidroni (evocation). To assist in this, Pandweki make use of special staves called wishaki. Each wisha contains an organic core, made from a rare kind of roppoli called sheskál, which has Force-sensitive properties. In addition to focusing and enhancing a wielder's Force powers, the core also feels and remembers each user's experiences. Old wishaki are added to archives on Hlésenil to record the information they have gathered, forming an important historical reference.
